Taking care of your toothbrush is essential for keeping your teeth in good shape

Updated:

Did you know that a toothbrush is one of the most important purchases you make? In addition to getting rid of harmful plaque that can cause cavities, they also help prevent halitosis, known commonly as bad breathe.

Interestingly enough, toothbrushes are not a modern invention. In fact, according to the American Dental Association (ADA), these devices have been around for nearly 5,000 years. They were known as "chew sticks" and made of bone, wood, ivory and even hog bristles and used to remove food that was stuck in between teeth.

However, modern toothbrushes as most people know them were created in the late 1930s and they've come a long way since then. In addition to manual brushes, people have the option of purchasing those that are battery operated.

Any family dentist like the experienced Dr. Thomas Cooke, will tell you that both are effective at cleaning your pearly whites. What matters most is that the brush fits comfortably inside the mouth. Dental care professionals, like those at the ADA, recommend that you pick a brush labeled with the ADA Seal of Acceptance, which means the product has been scientifically analyzed and designated as safe and effective.

When it comes to storing a toothbrush, the ADA advises that it be kept upright and uncovered. Ironically, using a protective casing can lead to the breeding of dangerous bacteria as microorganisms thrive in moist environments.

Always rinse your brush off after using it and remember to replace it every three to four months. Using it for longer can render the bristles ineffective at getting rid of any food particles that are stuck in between your pearly whites.

However, just brushing twice a day is not enough. You should also remember to schedule professional cleanings with an affordable dental care practice twice a year so that your chompers can be examined by a dentist in Raleigh.
